More About Vision Support

The way we see it

The ocular or visual system is the part of our central nervous system that gives us the ability to see, as well as to perform other functions related to vision. Comprised of our eyes, the optic nerve, the visual cortex and other organs, our visual system also helps us with the identification and categorization of the things we see, our ability to judge distance and depth, spatial awareness (our place in the world in relation to the things around us), movement, balance, posture, and much more.

While we can live without it, our ability to see plays a huge role in our quality of life and our ability to effortlessly interact with other people and the world around us. So it’s in our best interest to care for our vision and visual health throughout life.

Looking good

Just like other important body systems, our visual system relies on a healthy supply of nutrients to maintain peak efficiency. In addition to staple nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, our eyes and other components of the visual system can benefit from additional nutrients such as flavonoids and free radical scavengers that are found in many of today’s eye supplements.

  • Lutein – Classified as a carotenoid, Lutein is an orange-red pigment produced by plants and is obtained in the diet from colorful fruits and vegetables. In the body, Lutein is one of the predominant pigments concentrated in the macula, a specialized area of the eye that is responsible for central vision. In addition, it is known to be deposited in the skin. Lutein’s functional role in these vulnerable tissues is to protect against sunlight-induced free radical production.
  • Eyebright – Eyebright is an alpine herb with a long history of use in European herbal medicine. As indicated by its name, this herb has been traditionally used for various visual ailments, but modern studies into this herb’s benefits haven’t substantiated these traditional uses. Still, researchers have isolated flavonoids from Eyebright that may support its traditional use.
  • Bilberry – Similar to Eyebright, Bilberry is a plant with a long history of use by European herbalists. Resembling blueberries, the fruit of the bilberry has a number of phytonutrients, including some of the same flavonoids found in Eyebright.
  • Ocu Support™ – Ocu Support™ offers a full range of free radical-scavenging nutrients that may aid in maintaining some key visual functions. One daily serving of Ocu Support™ has 10 mg of Lutein, a carotenoid found in dark green leafy vegetables. Lutein is a dominant pigment in the macular region of the eye. Also included are the antioxidant eye vitamins A, C, and E, as well as supporting nutrients critical for neutralizing free radicals produced by sunlight.
